Week 3 of 8 · Still Becoming
Week 1 you learned a thought is not a verdict. Week 2 you learned you decide what someone leaves with. Sunday we looked at a room full of new names and said the truest thing about them: the Lord added. Read this after your coffee, one short morning at a time.
"They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God... And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."
For a long season this class did not grow. We buried friends. We watched people move away. Some years we simply held on, and holding on was the whole victory. Then, quietly, God started sending people, and most of us did not notice it happening.
Read the verse again and watch who gets the credit. Not the plan. Not the effort. Not the right program finally found. The Lord added. Luke wrote it that way on purpose. Paul says the same thing another way: somebody plants, somebody waters, and God is the one who makes anything grow at all (1 Corinthians 3:6). That takes a weight off you this morning. The growing was never your assignment.
So here is the only skill this week really asks of you. Anyone can learn to see what is wrong. The world teaches that for free, and Week 1 already named where it leads. Seeing where God is at work has to be trained. Look for it, and you will start finding it. Not because God started working, He was always working, but because your eyes changed.
You already know how to do this. Week 1, capture and test. Try it on this one: "Nothing much is happening in my life or my church." Test it against what God has been quietly doing here. Replace it.

He was working before I noticed.
Pray it: Father, thank You for what You have been doing while I wasn't looking. Open my eyes today, and the first thing I want to thank You for is ____________.
Do it: Say one name out loud, someone God brought into your life this year, and thank Him for them. If the moment opens: tell that person you did it.
Jesus-Sighting: Where did you catch God at work today, through you, around you, or to you? Write one line.
"So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."
Picture the young couple with their first newborn. A week without sleep, laundry to the ceiling, nobody has eaten a hot meal, and they look at each other and say, "let's have ten more." You would tell them what God is gently telling us: love the one you already have.
A name is not a number. It is a person who walked into a room full of strangers, sat down, and hoped somebody would talk to them. Hebrews says the one in front of you may be carrying more than you can see (Hebrews 13:2).
And a word for the ones who have already tried. Some of you reached out and got nothing back. No answer, no return call, and it stung a little. Silence is usually not rejection. It is a hearing aid that died, a phone nobody checks, a hard week, a person who did not believe anyone would really call twice. Love that assumes the best and calls twice is the kind Jesus was describing.
Here are nine words that work every time, and they cost nothing: "I'm glad you're here. Tell me one thing about you."
You already know how to do this. Week 2 you gave a word away. Today, give it to somebody newer than your usual circle.
Send it
Love the one He already sent.
Pray it: Lord, You already sent them. Today I am asking You to bless ____________ by name, and to make me somebody who answers.
Do it: That call or text you have been meaning to return, return it today. If they pick up: ask them the nine words. Either one counts.
Jesus-Sighting: Who did God put in front of you today? Write one line.
"My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness... For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Paul asked God three times to take the thorn away. Three times, and God said no. Not a cruel no. He answered with something better than removal: My grace is enough, and My power works best in exactly the place you keep asking Me to fix.
Watch how He works. Moses gets the assignment of his life and answers, "I'm not very good with words. I get tongue-tied." Eighty years old, a failure and a fugitive behind him. God does not send him to speech lessons. He says, who made your mouth? Now go (Exodus 4:11-12). Abraham and Sarah get a promise of a child, and Scripture does not soften it: his body was as good as dead, and so was her womb. That is the body God chose to bring a nation out of.
God did not wait for any of them to get strong. He used them weak, and the weakness is the part where everyone could tell it was Him.
Two weeks ago we talked about the voice you use on yourself. Here is that same voice with a new script: I'm too old. I'm too slow. I don't remember names. I have nothing to offer anymore. That sentence is not humility. It is the accusation again in a polite disguise, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 answers it flatly.
You already know how to do this. Week 1, capture and replace. Catch the sentence that starts "I'm too..." Hold it up against "My power works best in weakness."

The thing I hide is the thing He uses.
Pray it: Lord, the weakness I have been hiding is ____________. Spirit of God, rest on that place today. Amen.
Do it: Nothing else. Just that prayer, out loud, with the blank filled in.
Jesus-Sighting: Where did God show up in a weak spot today, yours or somebody else's? Write one line.
"Anna, a prophet... was very old... She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer... She began praising God and talking about the child to everyone."
Anna was a widow. Married seven years, alone ever since, eighty-four years old. No mountain left to climb and no title to protect.
Be careful not to make her smaller than Luke does. Anna did not merely show up. She kept a watch. Fasting and prayer, day and night, for decades, in a building where nothing dramatic ever seemed to happen. That was not the leftover of a life. That was her office. And it is exactly why she recognized the Christ when stronger, busier people walked right past Him.
So if your world has gotten small, if your days are spent caring for someone you love, if you are on Zoom because driving is over, if you spend more time in a chair than you ever planned to, hear this: that is not a lesser life. God calls it fruit. Anna would recognize you.
You do not have to be strong to love somebody. Willing and present is enough. And present does not mean passive. Anna was on watch, and your chair is a post.

You already know how to do this. Week 2 turned your eyes outward. Today, aim that at one person and hold them up.

You don't have to be strong to love somebody. Willing and present is enough.
Pray it: Lord, today I stand watch for ____________. Do for them what only You can do.
Do it: Pray one person by name, out loud, the way Anna did. Or: learn one thing about someone you don't know well, where they're from, one thing they love. Both are the same work. Either one counts.
Jesus-Sighting: Who came to mind while you prayed? Write the name down.
"The righteous will flourish like a palm tree... planted in the house of the Lord... They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, 'The Lord is upright.'"
Do not skip the small word. Still. Not "used to bear fruit." Not "bore fruit once, back when things were easier." Still. And notice where the psalm plants that tree: in the house of the Lord. The fruit is not produced by strength. It is produced by staying planted.
Notice too what the fruit is for. The psalm does not say the tree is impressive. It says the tree proclaims that the Lord is upright. Whatever grew in you this week was never about your week. It was God telling the truth about Himself through a life the world had written off.
And Jesus told His followers where to start. Jerusalem first, then everywhere else (Acts 1:8). Your Jerusalem this week is the chair across the aisle and the square on Zoom. One name, one call, one welcome, and a room slowly turns into a family.
You already know how to do this. All three weeks, stacked. A new response, a word given away, and now a room to love, in the strength God supplies rather than the strength you were waiting to feel.

God is not finished with me, and He is not finished with us.
Pray it: Lord, thank You that You are not finished. The person I want You to send me to on Sunday is ____________.
Do it: Write that name down for Sunday. That is all today asks. If the moment opens: invite them into something you are already doing, coffee, lunch, your table, a phone call you were making anyway.
Jesus-Sighting: Look back over five days. Which one still warms you? Star it.

Saturday and Sunday. None of these require strength.
1. Bring one sighting. In your head is fine.
2. Bring the name you wrote on Friday.
3. Sit one seat differently. Same friends, one new person pulled in. Widen, don't break up.
4. Pray before you walk in. Lord, whoever You already sent, help me love them today.
And one thing to carry in your mouth: give the room your best sentence first. The newest person here hears whatever we brought in with us. This week, let the first thing out be the good thing you saw God do.
Still Becoming · Willing and present is enough · 2 Corinthians 12:9
Bring one sighting and one name with you Sunday. In your head is fine.
With love,
